Oral antibiotics such as tetracycline, clindamycin,
erythromycin, minocycline, and doxycycline lessen
inflammation and infection by removing acne-causing
bacteria. The length of intake and the dosage of these pills
depend on the severity of the skin condition. Some of these
antibiotics can be taken during pregnancy, while some are
available as topical preparations.
Oral birth control pills can also be used to address acne
triggered by hormonal imbalance and are usually prescribed
to women. Cyproterone acetate and ethinylestradiol, the
hormones usually utilized in these contraceptives, interfere
with the production of male hormones. In reducing the levels
of testosterone (the male hormone), oil production by the
oil glands is decreased, and thereby lessening the
occurrence of blocked pores.
Isotretinoin pill, meanwhile, prevents formation of
whiteheads and blackheads by reducing the size and activity
of the oil glands. It is used to medicate acne with severe
swelling and inflammation, but it is not prescribed to
pregnant women or women who are planning to conceive as
intake of this pill can result in birth deformities. Because
of this and other possible side effects like depression,
intense headaches, bleeding, and dry skin, being closely
supervised by a doctor is imperative.
Oral preparations that combine nicotinamide, zinc, and folic
acid are used to reduce inflammation and oiliness of the
skin. Nicotinamide (a Vitamin B) and zinc are known for
their anti-inflammatory functions. However, some individuals
may experience nausea, fatigue, and dark urine from this
kind of medication.
Curing acne may require a period of time and more than just
one method of treatment. Hence, seeking the advice of a
doctor is crucial in knowing the cause of the problem and
the particular treatment that will be effective.
